Dental Cleanings, Deep Cleanings & Teeth Whitening
There are two different kinds of dental cleanings that one may require. One is just your regular run of the mill cleaning referred to technically as a Prophy. A prophy will be performed on someone that has no apparent infection in their gums and the doctor or the dental hygienist will do their best to remove any build up on your teeth like plaque or tarter during this routine teeth cleaning. If you require a Prophy for your regular dental check up cleanings you should see your Infinity Smile Dental Center dentist or hygienist about every six months or twice a year to make sure you stay on track.
The second type of cleaning is referred to technically as a Scaling and Root Planing, or Deep Cleaning in more general terms.
If you have infection in your gums your Infinity Smile Dental Center dentist may recommend that you have the deeper dental cleaning performed to help with the infection. In most cases a Scaling and Root Planing or dental Deep Cleaning will be a direct result of gum disease (periodontal disease, which is a later stage of Gingivitis) that consists of a bacteria that lies underneath the gums of your teeth. The disease physically eats away at the foundation of bone that your teeth lie in and can cause an abscessed tooth. The main concern is that once the bone is gone it may be gone forever so it is best to get a gum disease treatment before it is too late. Some symptoms of needing a deeper cleaning are a foul odor of the breath, bleeding of the gums or loose teeth. If you require a Scaling and Root Planing, or Deep Cleanings you will most likely be asked to split your visits up into two appointments so you will not have to numb up your entire mouth all at once and risk biting your cheek or being unnecessarily uncomfortable in your whole mouth after treatment. After your initial visits you will be asked to come back every three to four months or three to four times a year for what is called a perio maintenance. This is to make sure the gum disease has been treated properly and stays under control.
